As an ENT and Head-Neck Surgery specialist, I see many patients struggling with ear infections. Whether it’s a child tugging at their ear in discomfort or an adult experiencing sudden ear pain, I understand how distressing this condition can be. Ear infections are one of the most common reasons patients visit my clinic at Popular Medical College Hospital. In this guide, I’ll help you understand ear infection symptoms, what causes them, and the most effective treatment options available.
In my years of practice, I’ve learned that recognizing ear infection symptoms early makes all the difference in successful treatment. Let me share the most common signs I ask my patients to watch for
✦Sharp, throbbing, or dull ear pain that may worsen at night
✦Reduced hearing or a sensation of muffled sounds
✦Clear, yellow, or bloody fluid draining from the ear
✦Feeling of fullness or pressure inside the ear
✦Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
✦Fever and headache
✦Dizziness or balance problems
✦Frequent tugging or pulling at the affected ear
✦Excessive crying, especially when lying down
✦Difficulty sleeping or increased irritability
✦Trouble responding to sounds
✦Loss of appetite
✦Visible fluid drainage from the ear
✦Fever above 100°F (38°C)
I always tell parents: if your child shows these symptoms for more than 48 hours, it’s time to seek professional evaluation.
In my practice, I explain to patients that understanding what causes ear infections helps prevent future episodes. Let me break down the most common causes I encounter
Most middle ear infections I treat are caused by bacteria like Streptococcus pneumoniae or viruses from common colds and flu. These pathogens create inflammation and fluid buildup in the middle ear.
I often find that the root problem is a blocked Eustachian tube—the small passage connecting your middle ear to the back of your throat. When allergies, sinus infections, or swelling block this tube, fluid accumulates and bacteria multiply, leading to infection.
Many of my patients develop outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear) from swimming or bathing. Water trapped in the ear canal creates a moist environment where bacteria thrive.
✦Young children (under 3 years) with smaller Eustachian tubes
✦Seasonal allergies and frequent colds
✦Exposure to cigarette smoke
✦Weakened immune systems
✦Improper bottle-feeding positions in infants
Based on my assessment of each patient’s condition, I recommend treatments ranging from conservative management to advanced surgical interventions.
Antibiotics: For bacterial infections, I prescribe antibiotics like amoxicillin. I always emphasize completing the full course, even when symptoms improve.
Pain Management: I recommend over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to manage discomfort and reduce fever.
Ear Drops: For outer ear infections, I prescribe antibiotic drops when the eardrum is intact.
Decongestants: These help reduce swelling and improve drainage when allergies contribute to the infection.
✦Apply warm compresses to the affected ear for 10-15 minutes
✦Sleep with your head elevated
✦Stay well-hydrated
✦Never insert objects into the ear canal
For patients with chronic or recurrent infections, I offer advanced surgical options:
✦Myringotomy with tube insertion: I create a small incision to drain fluid and insert a ventilation tube
✦Tympanoplasty: I specialize in repairing perforated eardrums with excellent outcomes
✦Endoscopic ear surgery: I use minimally invasive techniques for precise treatment
I urge my patients to seek immediate care when they experience:
✦Symptoms persisting beyond 2-3 days
✦Severe ear pain or high fever (above 102°F)
✦Pus or blood draining from the ear
✦Sudden hearing loss
✦Swelling or redness around the ear
✦Recurrent infections (3 or more in 6 months)
✦Any symptoms in infants under 6 months
✦Dizziness or balance difficulties
I’m here to provide accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for every patient who walks through my door.
I always share these practical prevention strategies with my patients:
✦Maintain good hand hygiene
✦Avoid secondhand smoke exposure
✦Manage allergies with proper treatment
✦Keep vaccinations current
✦Dry ears thoroughly after water exposure
✦Feed infants in upright positions
✦Treat respiratory infections promptly
If you’re experiencing ear infection symptoms, I’m here to help. diagnose your condition accurately and create a personalized treatment plan.

Throughout my career treating ear infections, I’ve seen how proper care makes all the difference. I want you to know that ear infections are treatable, and with the right approach, you can recover fully and protect your hearing health. Don’t ignore persistent symptoms—early intervention prevents complications and ensures the best outcomes.
As your ENT specialist, I’m committed to providing compassionate, expert care using advanced techniques including endoscopic ear surgery, stapedotomy, and tympanoplasty.
In my experience, most ear infections improve within 2-3 days of starting treatment. However, if your symptoms persist beyond a week, I recommend scheduling an appointment for further evaluation.
While most infections I treat don’t cause permanent damage, chronic untreated infections can lead to complications. That’s why I emphasize early treatment to protect your hearing health.
Yes, I advise my patients to avoid swimming until the infection completely clears to prevent worsening the condition or delaying healing.
